North Korea has reprimanded the United States over allegations of the former’s involvement in crypto cybercrime. North Korea’s Foreign Ministry spokesman criticized the US comments on the Asian country, calling it aggressive.
According to the spokesperson, the labeling of North Korea as a region of cybercriminals illustrates the inhospitable policy of the United States towards the Asian nation. Reportedly, he affirms the department’s commitment to fighting Washington’s terrible branding on the country.
Recall that the Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technologies in the United States, Anne Neuberger, on Wednesday called North Korea a nation surrounded by criminal syndicates. According to Neuberger, the Asian nation generally generates massive revenue through cybercrime.
Over time, a North Korean hacking group identified as Lazarus has been linked to the many exploits endured in the crypto sphere. Recall that a 2022 report by Chainalysis linked the theft of over $1 billion worth of crypto to the hacking team.
As the report revealed, the team diverted the funds to a crypto mixer. In early 2022, France24 in a report said the FBI had indicted North Korean hacking teams Lazarus and APT38 for orchestrating the exploitation of Axie Infinity. As revealed, the exploitation of this protocol by these groups has led to over $620 million in plunder.
More so, an FBI report stated that the cyber crimes committed by the hacking team are not limited to the crypto space. The agency traced the genesis of the teams’ attacks back to the 1990s. It alleges that these attacks were carried out with the aim of furthering their country’s security interests.
Additionally, popular belief is that North Korea has many highly skilled hackers who specialize in exploiting cryptographic protocols. North Korean authorities have reportedly been accused of supporting hacking teams troubling the crypto industry. According to reports, the country relies heavily on funds stolen by hacking teams to sponsor its nuclear weapons program.
North Korea is currently under heavy sanctions from the United States, a development that is expected to affect its nuclear weapons program. However, North Korea appears to be making progress in achieving its nuclear weapons initiative, raising suspicions about its source of funding for the country’s nuclear ambitions.
